The chancellor draws an extra £250 million from caravan owners

The Holiday Caravan industry has developed off the HMRC radar,  be warned that change is afoot with announcements in the March 2012 Budget.   The Government are correcting anomalies and closing loopholes and applying VAT to holiday caravans. Residential caravans or park homes that comply with BS3632 will continue to be treated in the same way as residential housing, that is zero rated.   However holiday caravans that don’t comply with the residential British Standard are due to be standard rated  at the current rate of 20% from 1 October 2012.   HMRC are publishing a draft Statutory Instrument for consultation on 21 March 2012, at which time Anti-forestalling provisions will be introduced in a Finance Bill. The consultation runs until 4 May.
